Embrace's own homepage says it offers the option to get vet exam fees reimbursed, up to $100 to $200 per visit. | Lemonade | 0 days in Lemonade's current waiting-period guide, which says there is no accident waiting period and accident coverage is available the day the policy goes into effect, at 12:01 AM the day after purchase. Note: Lemonade's main pet page FAQ and its older sample policy say 2 days for accidents, which conflicts with the current guide. | 14 days | Not covered in the base policy. Vet visit fees are an optional add-on that covers fees when visiting the vet for eligible accidents or illnesses. | Not covered in the base policy. The sample policy lists any dental illness under conditions not covered, and Lemonade sells dental illness as an optional add-on covering treatments for dental illnesses such as gum disease and tooth extractions. Dental injury and accident costs are covered in the base policy. | Quote options |
| Healthy Paws | 15 days in Healthy Paws' general descriptions, described on one page as a 15 to 30 day waiting period depending on the state. Healthy Paws' coverage page excludes dental healthcare and periodontal disease claims, but says when teeth are injured due to an accident the plan covers extraction and/or reconstruction of damaged teeth. Its dental page says eligible dental accidents and illnesses are covered up to the chosen annual limit with no separate dental sub-limit, but does not cover the vet exam fee for dental treatment, which conflicts in wording with the periodontal exclusion and is flagged in the notes. | Read the review |

Terms captured October 27, 2026 from each insurer's own published documents. Waiting periods are the days a condition must wait after the policy starts before it is covered. "Not published" means the documents we captured do not state the point plainly.
Every insurer, checked the same way
Embrace: Covered. Embrace says it covers congenital and hereditary conditions, including genetic and breed specific conditions, provided they are not pre-existing when the policy begins. Illness coverage in the V5 policy lists genetic conditions.
Fetch (Fetch by The Dodo): Covered. Fetch lists breed-specific, hereditary and congenital conditions as covered in its standard plan, including hip dysplasia, with no breed restrictions stated in the coverage pages checked.
Lemonade: Covered if not pre-existing. Lemonade's comparison and medication pages say hereditary and congenital conditions are covered as long as they are not a pre-existing condition. The sample policy excludes hereditary, congenital and bilateral conditions where clinical signs were present before the original start date or before the end of a waiting period.
Healthy Paws: Covered. Healthy Paws' plan page says hereditary and congenital conditions are eligible for coverage so long as signs and symptoms first manifest after enrolling and after any applicable waiting periods, with no restrictions stated on that page. Hip dysplasia is an exception in practice: Healthy Paws' comparison footnote says it includes coverage for hip dysplasia when you enroll your pet before the age of six.
Trupanion: Covered. Trupanion's puppy and coverage pages list hereditary and congenital conditions, including breed-specific conditions such as hip dysplasia, as covered like any other illness, if not pre-existing.
Spot: Covered. Spot's own pages list congenital and hereditary conditions among covered illnesses, and its welcome materials list hereditary conditions as covered, provided they are not pre-existing.
Pumpkin: Covered as a basic benefit, with no extra charge. Pumpkin's comparison pages say hereditary, congenital and chronic conditions, from hip dysplasia and heart defects to arthritis and diabetes, are a basic benefit of any Pumpkin plan.
